Maintenance & Care

Teakwood is particularly appreciated for its outstanding colours and weather resistance (sun and bad weather). When teakwood is subject to bad weather, it turns a silver grey colour, over time, that many people love. Teakwood doesn't require any special maintenance other than occasional cleaning. If teakwood is left to age naturally outdoors, exposed to light, air and rain, its surface will oxidize and gradually become softer and its colour will then turn silver grey, as the pigments
of the surface layer of the wood will start to fade.

Without occasional cleaning, the surface of teakwood may turn greyish black or become dirty-looking. Teakwood must be cleaned. Use a soft brush with a gentle, biodegradable soap or lemon-based Murphy Oil Soap, and follow the manufacturer's instructions. Clean and rinse well. Your teakwood will gradually restore its silver grey colour.

To prevent teakwood from oxidizing and to allow it to preserve its golden colour, it is recommended that you apply a coat of specially-made oil, using either a paint brush or a cloth. It is advisable to apply the oil once in the spring and then again in the fall, before putting away your furniture for the winter. A treatment product, such as Cabot Australian Timber Oil (Natural colour), is an ideal choice. It is very affordable and can easily be found at all Réno-Dépôt stores.

Products for treating outdoor wood (Cetol, made by Sikkens) are also used to preserve the natural colour of teakwood. It is recommended that the wood be treated every 2 years.

During the season, avoid using maintenance products that might alter the finish. For maintenance, use a gentle, biodegradable soap or lemon-based Murphy Oil and follow the manufacturer's instructions.
